As you stand amidst the Riemeisterfenn, you're in one of Berlin's last remaining moorlands. Protected since 1963, this nature reserve preserves the region's original vegetation. The marshy landscape around you is what's left of the former Riemeistersee, which became overgrown in the early 20th century. Look to the south, and you'll see the Krumme Lanke, while a canal links this area to the Langes Luch nature reserve to the north. This connection is part of the Grunewald lake chain.
