The Operation Gold/Stopwatch spy tunnel in Berlin was a significant espionage endeavor by the CIA and British Secret Intelligence Service. Starting in 1955, they used a subterranean tunnel to tap into East German postal service phone lines connected to the Soviet Army's headquarters. The tunnel stretched beneath the Soviet-occupied sector of the city.
