Built in 1863 by architect August Dieckhoff in the neoclassical style, Villa Hammerschmidt has served as the official residence of the President of Germany since 1950. Situated along the Rhine, it was the primary residence until 1994 and now stands as the second official residence after Bellevue Palace. It is an architectural heritage monument in North Rhine-Westphalia and a stop on the 'Path of Democracy' historical trail.
