Founded in 1989, the Mechtenberg Nature Reserve in Essen is located in the Kray district near the Gelsenkirchen border. Together with the adjacent similarly named reserve in Gelsenkirchen, it forms the Mechtenberg Landscape Park. Despite their proximity, the areas are distinguished by different conservation goals and are registered as E-005 and GE-017.
