The Rhine-Herne Canal stretches 46 kilometers across the Ruhr area, overcoming 36 meters in elevation through five locks. Since its opening in 1914, it has followed the Emscher Valley, linking Duisburg in the west to Castrop-Rauxel in the east. By 2030, it aims to accommodate large motor cargo ships.
