Located in the northeastern part of Hamburg's city center, between Spitalerstraße and Rosenstraße, the Gertrudenkirchhof is steeped in history. Dating back to a plague cemetery from around 1350, it was once home to the Gertrudenkapelle until it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1842.

You're standing on the Gertrudenkirchhof, a place with deep historical roots. Around 1350, this was a plague cemetery, established during a time when the city faced the great epidemic. Later, the Gertrudenkapelle stood here, lending the square its name, until it was lost to the Great Fire of 1842. Look around, and you can almost sense the history embedded in the stones and walls of this square. To the south, you'll find the Mönckebergbrunnen, just a short walk away.
