Founded in 1938, the Neuengamme concentration camp served as a labor camp for the SS brickworks and military construction. Established as an independent camp in 1940, it operated at least 86 subcamps extending to the Danish border. The site is notorious for the inhumane conditions and medical torture inflicted here.
