You're standing at a significant spot in Herne. Founded in 1951, the St. Elisabeth Church was the last Catholic church built in the city during the 20th century. Take a look around; its architecture reflects the ecclesiastical styles of that era. Until its closure in 2024, it served as a vital part of the St. Dionysius community in the Emschertal deanery. On November 2nd, 2024, it was deconsecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Josef Holtkotte, meaning it was officially secularized. The future use of the building is still being considered, but whatever it becomes, it remains a place rich in history.
