Flittarder Rheinaue

You're standing in the heart of the Flittarder Rheinaue, a nature reserve covering around 180 hectares. Since 1991, this area has been protected to preserve the Rhine's dynamic natural floodplain, allowing for unobstructed flood influence. Stretching about four kilometers in length, this floodplain showcases landscapes typical of the Rhine's natural features. As you look around, you'll notice the proximity to major industrial sites in Cologne and Leverkusen, like the Ford and Bayer plants. Despite being near the city, the Rheinaue serves as a sanctuary for various wildlife and plant species. Just a short walk east takes you to St. Hubertus Church, while southeast, you can find the optical telegraph monument.
