Galgenbergdenkmal

Standing here, you're at a place of significant historical importance. On October 16, 1813, this was Napoleon's command post during the Battle of Wachau. In front of you is the Galgenberg Memorial, a stone stele erected on September 1, 1850, to commemorate this event. The inscription on its reverse, from Job 38:11, reads: 'This far you may come and no farther...'. These words serve as a reminder of the limits even great conquerors cannot surpass. If you look to the east, about 221 meters away, you'll see the Apelstein 5, another monument remembering that era. The peaceful setting here belies the dramatic events that unfolded in the past.
