The Altes Kaufhaus, also known as Dat Heringshus, was built in 1742 and played a significant role in Lüneburg's trade. Although a fire destroyed much of it, the facade on Lünertorstraße remains and now houses a hotel. It harks back to the days when salt, herring, and various other goods were traded here.
