Founded in 1759, the Schlossplatz in Münster spans an impressive 12.5 hectares, west of the city center in front of the castle. It hosts the thrice-annual Send fair, the prestigious 'Turnier der Sieger' equestrian event, and serves as the finish line for the Sparkassen Münsterland GIRO, one of Germany's largest cycling races. A significant historical event was the Nazi book burnings that took place here in 1933.
