Founded in 1712 by Duke Wilhelm Ernst, the former Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium is Weimar's oldest school building. Designed by Christian (II.) Richter, it remains one of the few preserved secular buildings from the pre-classical period. As part of the 'Classical Weimar' ensemble, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
