Hardenstein Castle, founded around 1354, is beautifully situated on the Ruhr between Witten and Herbede, surrounded by a nature reserve. Originally a 'fortified house', it served as a residence and had limited defensive capabilities. Now, the ruin is a protected architectural heritage monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
