The square marble obelisk was erected in 1898 to honor the 104 miners who lost their lives in the mining disaster at Zeche Zollern. Dedicated by the Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks Actien Gesellschaft, the memorial pays tribute to these brave miners. The inscription commemorates the victims of the tragedy on May 22, 1898.
