Founded in 1698 by August Hermann Francke, the Francke Foundations in Halle house over 50 cultural, scientific, and educational institutions. They are a rare example of Pietist functional architecture and are on Germany's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status. The site includes the Library of the Francke Foundations and institutes of Martin Luther University.
