The German War Memorial, also known as the Lion Monument, was erected in 1873. It commemorates the soldiers from Mainz who died during the campaign against France in 1870-1871. A bronze sculpture of a lion, based on a work by Christian Daniel Rauch, adorns the memorial. The inscription states it was made from cannons captured and gifted by Kaiser Wilhelm.
