Guided Story
Imagine standing in a room filled with stories from ancient times. Look around, the marble statues gaze down at you, but did you know the Glyptothek was the world's first public collection of ancient sculptures? King Ludwig I of Bavaria was determined to bring the art of antiquity to Munich at any cost. As you wander through these halls, you can almost feel the passion of that vision. Behind you, towards Königsplatz, is the Propylaea gate, like an entrance to another era. The architecture by Leo von Klenze you see is inspired by the great temples of Greece. Let yourself be enchanted by the silent dignity of each artwork and imagine how these sculptures once depicted the lives and gods of the ancient world.
