Merkursäule
A Historic Vantage Over Stuttgart's Core
Did you know?
Originally built in 1598 as a water tower, Stuttgart's Merkursäule has been topped by a gilded statue of Mercury since 1862, which many regard as a symbol of the city's commerce and economic strength.
Guided Story
Look up and catch the gleam of the golden statue atop the column. That's Mercury, the Roman god of traders and travelers, gazing over the city since 1862. To your left, you'll see the majestic Old Castle, one of Stuttgart's oldest landmarks. Right behind you, there's the Schiller Monument, honoring the renowned poet Friedrich Schiller. This column was originally designed as a water tower—imagine it storing water over 400 years ago! Take in the panoramic views from the platform, especially in the soft glow of early morning when the squares below spring to life. It's as if history itself is greeting you with a good morning.
