What are canonical and personal places?

Two Types of Places

On itemID, there are two types of places you can include in trails or visit.

Canonical Places

Canonical places are well-known locations imported from OpenStreetMap, such as landmarks, parks, or museums. They are visible to all users and can be used by anyone in their own trails.

  • Maintained by the community
  • Cannot be deleted or edited by individual users
  • Ideal for trails with well-known destinations

Personal Places

Personal places are ones you create yourself. You set the name, description, and exact location on a map. Each personal place automatically gets its own ID with a QR code.

  • You control the name, description, and location
  • Each gets its own QR code for check-ins
  • Perfect for scavenger hunts, private tours, or custom experiences

When Should I Use Which?

Use canonical places when creating a trail through well-known landmarks. Create personal places for custom locations not found in OpenStreetMap β€” like a favorite spot in the park or a hidden viewpoint.
