Check-ins & Achievements

Exploration1 min readΒ·Updated today

How check-ins work, what happens when you visit a place, and how achievements are awarded.

Overview

Checking in at a place records your visit and can unlock achievements. Each place can be visited once β€” revisiting a place updates your visit timestamp but doesn't create a new record.

What Happens on Check-in

When you check in at a place, the button transitions from β€œCheck in” to a β€œChecked in” stamp with a short animation. Your visit is recorded and counts toward trail progress and achievement milestones.

Achievements

Exploration achievements are unlocked by reaching milestones β€” for example, your first place visit, visiting 5 or 25 places, or completing a trail. Each achievement awards points that contribute to your explorer ranking.

Achievement Celebrations

When you unlock an achievement, the type of celebration depends on its significance:

  • Regular achievements: A toast notification slides in from the right, showing the achievement icon, name, and points earned
  • Gold achievements: High-value or secret achievements trigger a full-screen celebration modal with sparkle decorations and a gold-ring icon

Hidden Gems

Some places are hidden β€” they don’t appear on the map. When you scan the QR code at a hidden place, a special full-screen reveal animation plays before showing the place detail page.

Trail Completion

Checking in at a place that is the final stop on a trail automatically marks the trail as completed, unlocking any trail-specific achievements.
