Pets Complete Guide
Everything about pet profiles, collar tags, and missing posters.
Protecting Your Furry Friends
The Pets pillar in itemID is designed specifically for pet owners who want an extra layer of protection for their animals. Unlike standard item registrations, pet profiles allow you to store detailed information about your pet that can be invaluable if they go missing β breed, color, distinguishing features, temperament, and medical needs.
When someone finds your pet and scans the collar tag, they immediately see that this is a registered pet, along with any information you've chosen to share, and a way to contact you instantly.
Setting Up a Pet Profile
Create a pet profile from your dashboard by selecting "Pet" as the item type. You'll be prompted to enter:
- Your pet's name, species, and breed
- A recent photo (highly recommended)
- Physical description and distinguishing features
- Temperament notes (e.g., "friendly" or "shy, approach slowly")
- Veterinary contact information (optional)
- Special medical needs or medications
This information helps finders handle your pet safely and helps you prove ownership when recovering them.
Pet Statuses
Pet profiles use a specialized status system tailored to pet ownership:
- Home β Your pet is safely at home with you (default status)
- Missing β Your pet is missing or lost; activates enhanced finder alerts
- At Vet β Temporarily at the veterinarian for medical care
- With Sitter β Temporarily with a pet sitter, boarding facility, or walker
Unlike regular items, pets don't have a "Found" status. When your missing pet is recovered, simply change the status back to "Home."
When to Use Each Status
- Home: Normal day-to-day status when your pet is with you
- Missing: Immediately set when pet goes missing β finders see urgent alerts
- At Vet: During vet visits or overnight stays for medical care
- With Sitter: During vacations, daycare, or when boarding
Collar Tags
Use the label designer to create a pet-specific collar tag. Pet tag templates are designed with durable, waterproof materials in mind and typically include the QR code, the pet's name, and a "Scan me if found" message. You can order professional pet tags from our shop that are made from anodized aluminum β built to withstand daily wear.
Missing Pet Posters
If your pet goes missing, itemID can generate a missing pet poster automatically. Set your pet's status to "Missing" and use the poster generator to create a printable flyer that includes your pet's photo, description, the QR code, and a unique case number. These posters can be printed and distributed in your neighborhood or shared digitally on social media.
The QR code on the poster links directly to the pet's profile, making it easy for anyone who spots your pet to contact you immediately without needing to write down phone numbers.
