Trail Management

Learn how organizations create and manage curated walking trails with QR-enabled stops, progress tracking, gamification, and visitor analytics on itemID.

What Are Trails?

Trails are curated walking routes that connect a sequence of QR-enabled stops across a city, venue, or natural area. Organizations use trails to guide visitors through thematic experiences β€” historical tours, culinary adventures, nature walks, or cultural discovery routes. Each stop provides content, context, and check-in opportunities.

Trail Features

Stop Management

Each trail consists of ordered stops, which can be linked to existing points of interest or created as standalone locations. Stops include descriptive content, photos, audio guides, and optional quiz questions. Organizations arrange stops to create a logical walking route with estimated distances and completion times.

Progress Tracking

Visitors track their progress through trails by checking in at each stop via QR scan. The platform shows completed stops, remaining stops, and overall trail progress. Partial progress is saved β€” visitors can complete trails over multiple visits without losing their check-in history.

Gamification

Trails integrate with the itemID achievement system. Completing a trail earns a digital badge. Some trails feature bonus challenges at individual stops. Trail completion can also contribute to broader city-wide collection goals, encouraging visitors to explore multiple trails.

Multi-Language Support

Trail content β€” including stop descriptions, quiz questions, and completion messages β€” supports multiple languages. Visitors see content in their preferred language automatically.

Trail Types

  • City tours: Guided walks through urban highlights with historical and cultural context
  • Nature trails: Outdoor routes through parks, forests, or scenic areas
  • Themed experiences: Topical routes (food, art, architecture, seasonal events)
  • Event trails: Temporary routes for festivals, markets, or special occasions
  • B2B venue trails: Internal routes for large venues, campuses, or exhibition spaces

Analytics

Trail managers see completion rates, average completion time, popular stops, and drop-off points. This data helps optimize trail design, adjust stop placement, and improve the visitor experience over time.
