Push Notifications
How to enable and manage push notifications.
Stay Instantly Informed
Push notifications ensure you're alerted the moment someone scans one of your QR codes or sends you a message. Unlike email notifications, push notifications appear instantly on your device β even when you're not actively using itemID.
This is especially critical for items marked as "Lost," where every minute counts. Push notifications give you the fastest possible response time to coordinate a return with the finder.
Enabling Push Notifications
To enable push notifications, visit your notification settings in the dashboard. When prompted by your browser, click "Allow" to grant notification permissions. itemID uses a service worker to deliver notifications reliably, even when the browser tab is closed.
Push notifications work on most modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. On mobile devices, you can add itemID to your home screen for an app-like experience with full push notification support.
What Triggers a Notification
You'll receive push notifications for the following events:
- Someone scans one of your items' QR codes
- A new message arrives in one of your conversations
- An item's status changes (e.g., marked as found)
- Important account updates or security alerts
Managing Your Preferences
You have full control over which notifications you receive. From the notification settings page, you can toggle individual notification types on or off. You can also set quiet hours during which non-urgent notifications are silenced and delivered later as a summary.
If you ever want to disable push notifications entirely, you can revoke the permission in your browser settings or toggle them off in your ID preferences.
