Reporting Stolen Items
What to do when an item is stolen and how the Stolen status helps recovery.
When Items Are Stolen
If an item is stolen rather than simply lost, itemID provides a dedicated "Stolen" status that changes how the item is presented to anyone who scans it. This status helps with recovery efforts while protecting your safety.
Setting the Stolen Status
From your item's detail page, change the status to "Stolen." This action:
- Displays a "This item has been reported stolen" alert to anyone who scans the QR code
- Encourages finders to contact authorities or return the item anonymously
- Sends you enhanced notifications for any scan activity
- Creates a documented timeline if you file a police report
- Enables the same finder messaging features as the "Lost" status
Working with Law Enforcement
When filing a police report about a stolen item, you can export documentation from itemID:
- Scan timestamps showing when and where the QR code was accessed
- Location data if shared by finders
- Message history with anyone who scanned the code
- Photos and serial numbers you've stored in the item profile
- Proof of ownership through your registration date and details
Providing Information to Police
From your item's detail page, you can download a summary report that includes all relevant information for law enforcement. This report shows the item's registration details, recent scan activity, and any communication attempts.
If Your Stolen Item Is Scanned
When someone scans a QR code on an item marked as stolen, they see a clear message that the item is reported stolen, along with options to:
- Contact you anonymously through the itemID messaging system
- Report the find to local authorities
- Return the item without revealing their identity
Anonymous Recovery
The itemID messaging system allows honest finders to coordinate item returns without revealing their personal information. This is particularly useful if someone unknowingly purchased a stolen item or found it discarded by the thief.
Safety Guidelines
Important: Never attempt to recover a stolen item yourself if you believe the person who has it is the thief or was complicit in the theft. Always involve local law enforcement for your safety and follow their guidance on recovery procedures.
Meeting for Returns
If you coordinate a return through itemID's messaging:
- Meet in a public, well-lit location
- Bring a friend or family member
- Consider meeting at a police station's "safe exchange zone" if available
- Inform someone of your plans and expected return time
After Recovery
Once you've recovered your stolen item, update the status back to "In Possession." This removes the stolen alert and returns the item to normal operation. The scan history and messages remain available for your records.
